Srce upgraded its computing infrastructure with assistance of EU Finds

Zagreb, 29 January 2013, the final presentation of the results of the project „Providing graphics processing units in high performance computing environment“ took place at the University Computing Centre of the University of Zagreb. Through the project Graphic Processing Units – GPU nodes worth 89.298,95 euros (approx.  675 thousand kunas) have been provided and integrated into the existing Croatian National Grid Infrastructure (CRO NGI).

The project has been financed by the European union with 75.904,11 euros (approx. 576 thousand kunas) from the pre-accession programme IPA IIIC Regional Competitiveness and has been implemented by the University Computing Centre in Zagreb - Srce.

The aim of this project is to contribute to the growth and competitiveness of small and medium enterprises and Croatian economy through the provision of the necessary infrastructure in the field of high-performance computing. Such infrastructure is needed by the enterprises which base their work and development on the knowledge and application of the newest technologies. The project is aimed at enlargement of the Croatian National Grid Infrastructure (CRO NGI) and is coordinated by Srce. CRO NGI is a common resource of the scientific and academic community and represents essential infrastructure for scientific research, application of the new technologies and integration of Croatia and Croatian scientists into the European Research Area (ERA) and European Higher Education Area (EHEA) (http://www.cro-ngi.hr/).

Within this project a three-day workshop on graphic processor programming has been prepared for the users. The workshop will take place at Srce from 30 January to 1 February and will be repeated in the future if needed.

At the event, the performance possibilities of the new equipment and importance of its integration into CRO NGI were demonstrated. The guests were addressed by prof. Saša Zelenika, PhD, assistant minister of science, education and sports and Zoran Bekić, PhD, director of Srce. The technical results of the project were demonstrated by Damir Žagar, MSc, head of the Centre for Grid and Advanced Computing at Srce.

At the event, representatives from the academic community and economy, as well as representatives from the Ministry of Science, Education and Sports, Ministry of Economy, and Central Finance and Contracting Agency were present.
